WHAT TO SEE

in Viterbo

Besides the old palaces, churches, fountains and Medieval quarters, the city attracts many visitors for the Feast of Santa Rosa.

The spectacular celebration of Santa Rosa, the patron Saint of Viterbo takes place at the beginning of September, with a historical costume parade and the transport of the Macchina di Santa Rosa, an artistic illuminated bell-tower with an imposing height of 30 m and a weigh 5 tonnes. Adorned with spectacular lights, it is carried around the city by 100 robust men called Facchini.

Near Viterbo there is the small church of Santa Maria della Quercia (St Mary of the Oaks), the village of Bagnaia and “Villa Lante”.

If you stay in Viterbo it is also possible to visit Rome, the capital, important for its art and culture, but above all for our faith.

Rome is easily accessible by car or public transport.

Wellness.

Viterbo boasts also famous spas.

One is “Terme dei papi” spa. Its water was used by the Etruscans and the Romans.

Also Dante, in his Divine Comedy, speaks of these thermal springs, another proof of their importance. Bullicame is quoted in a line from the Inferno, where Dante passes a pool of boiling red water that reminds him of the thermal spas “whose waters are shared with prostitutes...”.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, passing through Viterbo between 1496 and 1536 was struck by the beauty of the spa and drew two paintings, which today you can see in Lille museum in France.
